WHAT ARE OTHERKIN? - A brief introduction to the concept and to therianthropy.
mirror

As the webring on the main index page of this site suggests, I am otherkin. It's a recent discovery about myself and something that I realized I've done with various characters throughout my life. Sol's the latest, and the one that made me figure it out and accept it. I am far from an expert on any of it, but I have dug up some resources to share with people who have asked me about it.

There is a generally hostile reaction towards alterhumans and I hope that, by compiling scientific research alongside personal essays, maybe this page will change at least one person's negative view towards it.

== STUDIES ==

== “We Are Spirits of Another Sort”: Ontological Rebellion and Religious Dimensions of the Otherkin Community - Joseph P. Laycock, 2012:

Nova Religio: The Journal of Alternative and Emergent Religions Vol. 15, No. 3 (February 2012), pp. 65-90 (26 pages) Published By: University of California Press

JSTOR - A study that covers the history, culture, psychological, and spiritual aspects of otherkinity in a refreshingly neutral way. This journal article is probably the best resource for getting a general idea of otherkinity without the bias present in most news articles, which tend to frame it as some kind of freak internet cult, or anecdotal essays. The JSTOR page requires a library or other institutional membership to read fully and download. Fortunately, some people are a little bad and just leave .PDFs like this laying around cyberspace. Who knows where you might find one.

== Otherkin Timeline: The Recent History of Elfin, Fae, and Animal People - Orion Scribner:
.PDF (1.57mb) - Written, edited, and originally hosted by By Orion Scribner with permission granted to rehost elsewhere. A document a little over 100 pages long that covers the full history, timeline, and culture of otherkin and therians. I haven't finished reading this one yet, but what I have read has been very informative. It was written by otherkin and peer reviewed by otherkin, though manages to approach the topic from a neutral and scientific angle. Everything in it is sourced (as well as Scribner could). Some websites mentioned or sourced in it are no longer live.

== On Being Non-Human: Otherkin Identification and Virtual Space - Devin Proctor, 2019:

A Dissertation submitted to The Faculty of The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of The George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. May 19, 2019

Website - Proquest (webview .PDF) - A 422 page scientific dissertation on Otherkin. Very dense, but incredibly interesting for anyone curious about a deep psychological dive into alterhumanity/otherkinity. Summary of the study from the author's website: "This dissertation examines digitally-mediated identity and community construction through the lens of the Otherkin, a group of several thousand people who identify as other-than-human. They recognize their biological humanness, but nonetheless experience non-human memories, urges, and sensations. I argue the Otherkin characterize a larger shift in body-identification that is underway in many industrialized countries, away from bounded, biologically defined bodies and toward a more plastic, negotiable type of embodiment I am calling open-bodied identification, evidenced in growing numbers of people identifying as trans*, nonbinary, fluid, and neurodiverse."

== OTHER ESSAYS ==

Personal essays & anecdotal writings.

== Orion Scribner's Essays:
- Website - Scribner's essays are some of the best. An excellent resource.

== Aestherians' Neocities Essays:
- Neocities - A collection of relatively brief essays by Neocitizen, Aestherian. I found rair essays helpful for figuring myself out.

== Falconiforme's Neocities Essays:
- Neocities - Another collection of personal essays. Some these discuss fictionkinity, which is difficult to find essays or information about in my experience.

== Alterhuman Archive's Library:
- Neocities - Archive of essays covering otherkin, fictionkin, therianthropy, plurality, and otherheartedness. I have not read all of these but it is one of the better 'kin archives out there.

== From Fictionfolk:
- Itch.io - "From Fictionfolk is a zine about the experiences of those who have a fiction-based identity. Containing both written and drawn autobiographical pieces from a variety of fictionfolk, this zine aims to show the good, the bad, and the bittersweet aspects of such identities." - A zine focused on fictionkin specifically.
