What's this all about?

This is an archive of Dengeki PlayStation magazine issues from before the year 2000 with Guilty Gear articles in them. Originally this page was a collection of information for issues we lacked scans for, but we have scans of all of them now so it has been converted to a separate archive for them.

All scans are by Bocchi the Rock FGC (bsky, tiktok) except for the April '96, Vol.19 issue. Additional thanks to Bocchi for sending me photos of various random parts of issues for documentation, and I'm sure I probably owe Shmuel thanks too for finding info somewhere on some of these. Good things come in threes so final, additional, thanks to Volcanic Fighter for having photos of Vol.34's spread in his archive that he shared with me, and I think the original photos of Vol.10 that I used for my initial translation too.

・ "Fighting" games focused issue ("F" issue title marker).

・ GoGoRPG issue, but doesn't seem to be a "special issue" like Vol.72.
・ Cover is an original illustration by Tsukasa Kotobuki (ことぶきつかさ).
・ "Guilty Gear" title no longer has the "仮" marking it as tenative/undecided.

・ April Special Issue.
・ Sol and Ky cover drawing by Daisuke Ishiwatari.
・ Big blue F2 in the corner (Fighting games issue).
・ The gold text has a cool metallic finish in person but it might be hard to tell in photos.
・ This is the last issue to feature the 3D generated sprite graphics.

══════ vol.34 1996/11/22 ══════

・ Blinding cover design that's impossible to read.
・ Super interesting placeholder assets in the in-game screenshots in this issue. Note everyone being "Sol Badguy" and the lack of portraits for Potemkin and Zato.
・ This is the first issue with hand drawn 2D sprite graphics. With all the placeholders, it's likely the graphics were redone sometime between late April to possibly October 1996.
・ Tragically lists the release date as "Scheduled for May 1997" (it was delayed). [return to navigation]

══════ vol.59 1997/11/14 ══════

Dengeki PlayStation vol.59 1997/11/14

Cover image for DPS vol.59, showing a young boy and girl in scifi uniforms standing in front of two large mecha heads. The heads have lots of curves and aren't very angular.

Page count, number: 2 total, p.28-29
・ Totally not Evangelion cover illustration.
・ Some more weird UI elements in this one, such as blue-haired "Milliah," "Potemkm," "Krif," and what seems to be color-inverted portraits for Ky and Kliff.
・ The gameplay itself looks the closest to what would end up in the final release, with recognizable moves for some characters.
・ Blood.
・ Does not list a release date, estimated or otherwise.

══════ vol.72 1998/04/24 ══════

Dengeki PlayStation vol.72 GoGoRPG Special Issue 1998/04/24

Cover image for DPS vol.72 featuring three heavily stylized anime girls with big eyes standing in front of a pastel pink background. Two of them are in high school uniforms and the third appears to be their teacher, who wears a lab coat.

Page count, number: 2 total, p.34-35
・ GoGoRPG Special Issue.
・ Guilty Gear (ギルティギア) is not mentioned on the cover, but it's in there.
・ Shows a lot of art and graphics that are in the final release, including alt. color palettes for characters.
・ Lists release date as April 23rd. It ended up getting delayed. Again.
・ Imagine how buggy this release had to have been.

Dengeki PlayStation D7 vol.73 CD-Rom Special Issue 1998/5/22

Cover image for DPS vol.73 featuring what appears to be an illustration of an android woman. She is wearing a robe and tall hat with repearing circle and gear motifs in brown and cream with blue accents in her eyes and gem on her hat. CDs flow out of her raised hand.

Demo Disc Video: YouTube (5:31)
Demo Disc Rip: Vimm's Lair

Page count, number: 6 total, p.12-17, +GGML ad
・ CD-Rom Special Issue. "D7" marks it as the 7th demo disc issue.
・ Guilty Gear demo on it that's loud as fuck!!!!!!!
・ Demo version seems basically the same as the final release outside of some minor things ("Gun Frame") and bugs.
・ Main article and the ad in the back both list the release date as April 23rd, despite this being a late May issue. Oops!
